Happy Birthday Eric!!!

Hello,

How is everyone doing? I hope all is good with you, and that Mom and Dad got home safe and that everybody has returned to normal life, or as normal as you can call our lives. It sounds like all of you had exciting week with lots of stories and stuff to tell.
Good stuff.
Well I have made it to the second floor finally...I have climbed 2 flights of stairs in my life and I hope many more to come. The members and missionaries are good to make a missionary feel at home for his birthday. It all started on Wed. at district meeting when they bought a cake for me and we celebrated a day early. I tried not telling a lot of people because I just wanted it to be a regular day but my companion told basically all the missionaries in the zone and the members. It was nice of them to do that for me. That night our ward mission leader invited us over and I thought it was for correlation meeting as usual but they had made pizza an sang to me and stuff because they wanted to do it on my birthday but couldn’t because we have English class at night that I am teaching. I have pics but forgot my camera so next week, then on my birthday I totally forgot and I was just doing my normal stuff and at about 8 am one of the missionaries said Happy Birthday and I was like what and then looked at my watch and said 25 mar......haha. Hermana Chavez always calls all the missionaries on their birthdays so she called me and she said my name almost right but good enough said she had been practicing with Presidente Antes Del Lamado, she is funny. At lunch the family Guajardo bought a cake and we ate Zabello Italiano. I love that dish, It is basically zucchini casserole with lots of cheese so good. Worked as usual and had English class that went good. Had about 7 non members there that night Elder Arellano, Gallo and Carlstrom bought ice cream and cake and we celebrated. We were saying it was so fun we should celebrate birthdays everyday and then we realized we don’t have enough money to do that.
It was a good day and a good week as far as work goes. Elder Gallo and I are working really well together now he has lightened up a bit and well I have changed a bit too. There isn´t as much tension in the house anymore too. We had 5 investigators at church on Sunday, Alejandra, Valentina, Daniela, Jeanette and her son Alexis. awesome way to start of the cambio and asistencia was 63 and that is super good. The family of the former Chillán stake president moved into our ward and he is awesome. We need another strong family to help us in the work. We have lunch with them this week and I am happy to get to know them. I guess the bigges noticia was that we had a baptism on Sunday too. Jeanette got baptized and Elder Gallo got to baptize her. I am really happy for her. She had made a lot of huge changes in her life. She quit smoking in a week. The only thing is she has to wait 2 weeks for her confirmación...but we will keep contaco diario with her to keep her strong and going. I am super happy for that. I will send pics next week hopefully.
That is about it for my week have been thinking a lot about you all lately, especially with Em going to the temple and birthdays and the wedding coming up but I am focused. I love you all so much and hope all is well with you all. Thank you for all the Birthday wishes. Mom try not to send much I don’t know how well mail is working if you have to send something go ahead but I don’t know how well Chile is functioning, but I am always happy to get mail. We have conference this week and I am happy to here about other missionaries and especially about Cauquenes. I have seen pictures but I want to hear about the members and my converts. I heard it just got destroyed due to all the adobe....the government building and mercado buildings totally fell down up there.
I love you all so much and I hope all is well with you all. Enjoy General Conference this weekend I will. I know the gospel is true and it is the only way we really can be happy in this life and after too. I love you all so much. Hold to the rod and walk the correct path...there is no happiness if we aren’t living in accordance to the laws of God. I love you all so much and take care. Love you
Love Eric

Getting Back to Missionary Work

Hola,
How is everyone doing? What is the news from the states the land to the north?
Today is the first day of a new cambio and of course all want to know who leaves and who stays.....well I will have my 3rd cambio with Elder Gallo here in Cordillera and I knew that everyone did...it wasn’t a surprise but I don’t know if I can live another six weeks with him. I might explode but I have to do it, so I will do it. Oh well asi es la mission (thus it is the mission). Elder Bastow se va, has been in his sector here in Chillan for 5 cambios he came in with me and he is going to Penco to the sector of Coelemu which was hit hard by the earthquake. He is leaving me here with two latins and a gringo from his MTC distrct that I don’t know very well. oh well asi es la vida (thus it is the life).
This Saturday we had a big surprise when they called and said Pres. Chavez was coming up to do interviews with us here in Chillan to that point we were the only zone that hadn’t had interviews yet. It was good to see them and here their stories. They just got water in Concepcion this past weekend. It is crazy how different our worlds are because we are back to normal life and they will be living in destruction from months more if not for years to come. It was good to see them and I got my one of the packages, not the birthday one but I might get it in a week or 2 more I am positive I am today...I have to be to stay alive. This weekend was Stake Conference, Hermana and President Chavez were here and spoke at all the sessions. The members were blown away by their talks and they were awesome.
We had 4 investigators at church on Sunday, Janeth, who passed her baptismal interview just has to not smoke this week and for the rest of her life. We help her kick it in a week with the help of the lord and her desire to do it also. So awesome just need to help her strengthen her Testimonio de Jose Smith and she is ready for the 28 of March. 2 young women came too, they are daughters of a less active and we are working to reactivate her, Constanza 16 and Valentina 12. They are really cool and want to get baptized just need to strengthen their mom and get permiso de su papa who is in Antarctica for the military right now. So for now we are just teaching no rush but they want to do it. Alejandra, she came with her two kids Francisco 6 and Ignacia 4, I think. Ignacia likes to play with me and draw so I gave her my planner and we were drawing to keep her busy so Alejandra could listen. Alejandra is having a lot of family problems. The father of her kids is Jewish and he hates us but oh well...Alejandra has fecha for the 11 of April, that is basically it for our investigator who are progressing right now.
It has been a rough cambio with baptisms again. It has been a while for me but we have a lot that are ready just need to stay strong and the members need to help us out. With all this earthquake stuff they just complain and say they can’t help us for silly reasons but we have done a lot of service and stuff for them and they need to help their neighbors and fellow people recibir estas bendiciones (to receive these blessings).
I am doing well, plugging along as usual. This past cambio was a hard one and I know it was the hardest of my mission so far. I have just realized I was letting things get to me and most of Satanas. I let him get in my head and between me and the work and it was lame. It just helped my testimony grow that we are never safe from him, he comes at us from every direction and slowly picks away until he finds the stuff that really gets to us and when he finds it he starts going at it with a ten pound sledge and jack hammers to expose and irritate as much as possible, but if we hold strong to our faith and hold to the rod he will never win. I am glad I was able to kick him out of my head early but I know it will not be the only time. As a missionary he knows he has to work harder, but we are smarter. You can never let your guard down.
But I am good. I am ready to start this Cambio with a bang and put it all out there and work till the end not to say I wasn’t working before, it has been really hard but I let my companion get to me and little things too. I won’t let it happen again. This work is about other people and that is why I work. I am not here to be a regular person I am here to save almas (souls) to help people arrepentirse and bautizarse parar recibir un perdone de sus pecados (to regret and to be baptized, and receive pardons for sins) I love the work my Spanish still sucks but one day it will be better.
I hope you all have a good trip out to Utah and with Em at the temple. I wish I could be there but can’t....there are people who need me here.
I had so many funny stories to tell you but all have left my head, I love you all so much and love to read all your emails and all the stuff that is going on with you all back home. I hope you all have great week and take care. I know this is where I need to be and that all will be fine. I am glad to be back to normal work and grind here. You start to miss it when an earthquake messes everything up. haha. I love you all. Happy Birthday Mom.
cuidense mucho. les amo.les quiero.
Love Eric
P.S. Got the package with the syrup, I think for my bday I will have french toast with my maple syrup. thanks mom. I am sure I will get my bday pckg and if not it is okay hugs and kisses, love you

"The Night The Lights Went Out In Chile'"

hola familia mía, ¿cómo estai chiquillos? Que te pases lo chancho!
How is it going all you folks in the calm relaxed world of the riches and glamour...haha at least that is what all the Chilenos think of the USA.
As you can tell from the title of this email I am going to write a song and steal the tune from Reba but it is okay we will be on tour in a year and a half haha....no but I do have a good story behind this.
We were in the house of Luis and Gerthy our investigators who got back from Santiago this week, and they are doing great. I want to take a picture with them to send because their baby is so freaking cute. She has gotten a little chubbier though, the sad news is Luis is leaving this week to work in Antofogasta....he will work 20 and rest 10....ugh but oh well they are doing good and it was great to meet and talk with them but anyway....We were just about ready to watch the movie la restauracion and when I hit play.......weeeeeeeemmmmmmmm....lights se fueron....the lights went out. Luis called his family in Santiago and they said the lights from Antofogasta all the way to the south were out in Chile and nobody knew why....I am telling you it was pitch black and no moon or stars were out, it was like walking around with you eyes closed at night. No light at all. Basically the power was out in about 90% of Chile, ridiculous right? We stayed with them till 9:45 but had to leave and go home. We stopped by the Obispo´s house to borrow a flashlight because we couldn’t see a thing and didn’t want to get robbed...just kidding Mom! We made it home safely and the lights came back on around 6 am, it was funny like camping but in a foreign country.
We had a good week. Three investigators came to church, but some that made a hand shake promise with me and didn’t come.....I have gotten to be very blunt with this because if I am not they don’t do the compromisios, but I am blunt with lots of love because it is true. I want them to follow through with these things so they can receive the blessing I have. They just need a push....really hard one.
Yesterday in the calle there were about 10 chicos persigiendonos when they came running at us to swear at us I yelled "CUIDATE! TE VOY A BAUTIZAR!"( Be careful I will baptize you!) HaHa, they stopped dead in their tracks they still swore at us though. Chicoscan can be really annoying sometimes in the street. We were in a Nagocio and this drunk guy came in totally smashed, and just fell smack down and broke a bunch of wood crates.....my companion helped him up and he stumbled out into the middle of the road and passed out, good thing it wasn’t a busy road...it is sad to see people like that. There are laws here but nobody enforces them and nobody seems to care.
On Friday all the missionaries here in Chillán had a big treat, we had a small zone conference with Elder Zabellos y Elder Cañoles of the Seventy. Elder Zabellos is in the Presidencia de Area. They have been in all of Chile visiting members and missionaries to help and give them hope and to excite them. It was a powerful time to be able to listen to a general authority and hear his appreciation for us and our work. He expressed how we are the face of the church and how we need to be digno to bare that responsibilidad. awesome guy. They brought us chocolate to cheer us up too, it has been good to get back to work as usual here and pushing along. We might have entravistas this week but not 100% sure...I know President Chavez is still really concerned said that cambios wont be a lot this time just enough to fill holes and stuff so I might have another cambio with Elder Gallo it will be hard...oh well.
Today we had a zone activity and we did an American bar b que! They tried to start the coal but failed twice so Elder Bastow and I stepped in and lit them up good and hot....wooohooo....lets cook Bessy!. I tell you only Americans know how to do it...not to brag but I tell you "soy capo" haha. I am the Grill Master! We used a grill that has been sitting at our house and worked awesome, so good I attached a pic of me going to town on my slab of beef.....so good just salted very well and cooked to a medium well so good! I will have to get more pictures from the other Elders but it was super fun. My zone is sick minus my companion just kidding, I love him but he is a pain in my side haha.
I have attached some photos to show you all what is going on here, I will see if I can put a description on them and if not I will do it at the bottom of this letter.
MOM, did you send me a new journal because mine is all used up I have started to write on paper, so if not could you throw one in the next package. I will keep you posted on the packages. If they are in Concepscion I won’t get them till either next zone conference in 2-3 weeks or when Pres. Chavez comes up here but I will get them some time no importa if before or after my birthday.
I love you all so much and hope you all are doing super. I know there is no other place I need to be but here right now in this time there are people I need to save and help.
cuidense mucho. que dios les bendiga. les amo mucho y les quiero tambien.
Love Eric

The Clean-up and the All-You-Can-Eat Chilean Chinese Food Restaurant

hola a todo mi gente allà en los estados! ¿que te pasas chiquillo? ¿Còmo esta?
Well I am sure you all have the correct and real info because here the news and all the people love to freak out and make stuff sound so much worst than it really is. I have photos to send but I am short on time today so I cannot do it but will for sure next week.
This week has been a week of regular clothes and lots of service. To start we were in regular clothes because about 150 prisoners escaped from the prison in Centro. When I got here and saw the prison they said...."if someone sneezes it will fall down" haha and it did! The Elders in that sector said they heard gun shots and saw the prisoners running down their street that night, bakàn......means cool in Chileano....for this past week we have had torque de queda....curfew...this whole week and it will continue this coming week. A couple nights we had to be in at 8pm but now it is at 9pm so we have to be in the house by that time. The Policia, Ejèrcito and Carabineros are out and had permission to shoot anybody outside so we were inside. I slept with my knife next to my bed because we woke up one night and the dog was going crazy and we think someone was outside, but we have not had problems. The news people make stuff sound worst than it is. I didn’t sleep well because the aftershocks wake me up so we have all be super tired. We did a lot of service for members and investigators this week. Cleaning up brick walls that fell and houses of members that had stuff all disorganized. Chillàn got hit hard but in our area the houses are newer and so they held up a lot better. My house is fine a couple cracks in the paint and stucco....but it is a house of wood and so it held up better to this stuff. We were lucky, some of the missionarie’s houses are in bad shape, but all are okay. Our house was just super messy. We have not had the strength to clean and stuff but this morning we did a deep cleaning and all is back to normal
To tell you the truth the only reason I notice the aftershocks is because I can here the house creak and I am a light sleeper. I found the actual earthquake fun and after not so much with all the people robbing and stuff, but I think stuff is starting to level out and people are starting to calm down...I hope.
People are so freaked out that there might be a bigger earthquake here because the scientists here are stupid and know nothing. Oh and one member said this was an earthquake caused by the USA because we had a weapon that went off! haha nada que ver haha, whatever.Luis and Gerthy and their baby went to Santiago to stay with their parents. Luis doesn’t have work right now and couldn’t pay to eat so they had to go up there but I hope they come back soon. They are fine a little shaken up but good, they have a good relationship with the Obispo and went to his house because they were scared and hadn’t eaten in a couple days. The Obispo’s wife made then lunch and gave them food. I am glad they live close have a good relationship it helps us a lot.
All of our investigators were okay. I got bit by a dog last Saturday too, I forgot to tell you. It was a dog of an investigator and it hates me.....ugh but no blood or marks.I am good living but nice and tired. It was a hard week with my companion, I am praying for a cambio transfer in two weeks but who knows if there will be any changes. We are not having interviews this cambio because President Chavez can’t get out of Concepcion.
Well, I have forgotten all I wanted to say to you all and will remember 10 minutes after I sign off. If you all have questions send them to me and I hope I will answer them. I hope I have answered all of Dad’s questions.
M white shirts are clean but my service clothes aren’t, I need to by new jeans because mine are huge on me, I look so ridiculous they are like 2 sizes too big. I looked to buy here but all are expensive. It stinks because the 2 pair I brought with me are still new. I like being skinnier the members call me flacito.
I hope you are all good and hope you don’t worry too much, because I am fine. I am living and in one piece. The news reporters are stupid and they don’t know anything, it is just how it goes in the mission. There was a reason why I was called to be here during this. Chile has to be rebuilt and we will rebuild it as Zion. It might have been something to help the people clean it up and change their ways.
Sorry for this lame email but we kind of goofed around today shopping and stuff. I bought a sweet hoodie though will send pics. We went to an all you can eat Chinese food restaurant in Chile, haha it was okay but I miss American Chinese food.
I love you all so much and you are always in my thoughts and in my heart. Not a day goes by that I see something and wish one of you was next to me to share the laugh, because my Latin companion doesn’t have much of a sense of humor....he doesn’t get my dichos and quotes. I love you all so much and keep pressing forward you all.
Congrats T2 on the job....and just keep going with all your stuff. I love you all so much I know you all are busy and stuff. Thank you for your letters and emails and all I love to hear about what is up with you all back home. Love you all so much and hope you have a great week.
cuidense mucho, que les vaya bien......que dios les bendiga! les amo mucho y les quiero mucho. PAZ FUERA jajajajajajajajajaja Love Eric

Everything is OK Don't Worry!

Well we found internet access and I just wanted to write really quick to say I was okay. I have alot of stories to tell and stuff to tell you but right now the most important thing is that I am okay.
We got a little power and water Sunday night but this morning went out again. We are still feeling aftershocks and such so we are not getting much sleep. I have been worring about you all but, I am fine.
The funny thing about it was it happened at 3:30 am and the other Elders wwent to the door I realized it was an earthquake when the shaking didn´t stop for a minute. I stayed in my bed and road it like a wave, it was a little fun, lasted about 3 min.
I hope you all arent having earthquakes but it would be good to check the water supply and make sure flashlight have batteries and all. People here are going crazy but we are taking percautions. We have to be in the house around 8pm and we are to wear regular clothes.
Thank you for your prayers. I love you all and I have alot to tell like stories but I am okay. Everything is fine, communication with Concepcion is still bad but we are all good. I love you so much. Sleep because you know I am fine. Cuidense mucho I love you all. You are in my thoughts and prayers love you all so much you have no idea.
I am glad we have a Profet who tells us to prepare for this stuff...listen to the Profets voice. I love you all I will write some stories and stuff and tell you later love you all.
Love, Eric

Our Boy Has Checked In

After a few of the longest days that we can remember Eric has checked in. I bolted for my cell phone when it went off about 9am PST, when I saw that it was a restricted number I hoped that I would hear the voice that we had been waiting to hear since Saturday
He said that they are in one of the hardest hit areas. He said it was 8.6 they were told and according to Eric "lasted 3 minutes".
He said they have food and water and that this morning he had his first shower since Saturday so he was feeling pretty good. They have no electricity or internet accesss, and they have been trying to call out with no sucess until today. He said that since some convicts have escaped from the damaged jails, they have been told by their Mission President to stay in groups, wear regular clothes (not their usual white shirts and ties). There is a curfew in effect so they have to be inside by dark.
I didn't get to ask him but, I am sure in the next few days they will be put to work helping wherever they can to help the members and non-members alike wherever they are needed. Eric will certainly have stories to tell about this experience.
We knew he was OK but hearing his voice was confirmation of that. Thank you for all you thoughts and prayers in his behalf. It maybe awhile before he can email out but we will post any new information that we get.
